Reliance Entertainment to Distribute ‘Hamnet’ in India in 2026
Reliance Entertainment has announced that it will distribute the highly acclaimed period drama ‘Hamnet’ across India in February 2026. This film, which is currently generating significant buzz during the awards season, is based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell. The narrative follows the renowned playwright William Shakespeare, portrayed by Paul Mescal, as he grapples with love, loss, and the creative process while writing his latest play.
The film explores Shakespeare’s relationship with Agnes, played by Jessie Buckley, alongside the profound grief he experiences after the death of his young son, Hamnet, depicted by Jacobi Jupe, due to the plague. This tragedy serves as a catalyst for Shakespeare’s later work, ‘Hamlet’.
Directed by Chloe Zhao, known for her critically acclaimed films, ‘Hamnet’ marks her return to feature filmmaking following her 2021 Marvel project. The film has garnered significant attention, earning 11 nominations at the Critics Choice Awards and six Golden Globe nominations, solidifying its status as a leading contender in this year’s awards circuit.
In a review for Variety, Peter Debruge notes that Zhao’s direction invites audiences to engage with themes of loss in a profound manner. He describes the film as a reflection on what it means to live fully, even in the face of inevitable death. The emotional depth and artistic brilliance of the film have resonated widely, making it a noteworthy addition to contemporary cinema.
Dhruv Sinha, head of international business at Reliance Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm about bringing ‘Hamnet’ to Indian audiences. “The film has resonated deeply with global viewers and critics alike,” he stated. “Its extraordinary recognition at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes is a testament to its emotional power and artistic brilliance.”
Reliance Entertainment is dedicated to providing world-class cinema to Indian viewers, and ‘Hamnet’ exemplifies storytelling that transcends cultural boundaries. As the film approaches its release, anticipation continues to build, promising a compelling exploration of love and loss.
