Parrot’s Grief Journey Highlights Importance of Animal Emotions
The documentary “Parrot Kindergarten” shines a light on the emotional world of animals, particularly through the lens of Ellie, a parrot grappling with grief over the loss of her sister, Lily. This exploration of grief underscores a profound truth: the emotional lives of animals are complex and deserving of recognition. The film, directed by Amy Herdy, reveals how Ellie, using a communication device, expresses her sorrow and facilitates a shared grieving process with her human mother, Jen Taylor-O’Connor.
One poignant moment occurs when Ellie, after years of silence about her deceased sister, begins to recall Lily three years later. Taylor-O’Connor initially introduced a grief menu to Ellie’s communication board without expecting much use. To her surprise, Ellie immediately engaged with it, sparking a dialogue about feelings and memories that Taylor-O’Connor was unprepared for. “I was taken aback,” Taylor-O’Connor recounted in an interview with Salon. “I honestly wasn’t ready to have any kind of conversation about it.”
The documentary highlights the unique bond between Ellie and Taylor-O’Connor, showcasing how their relationship evolved as they navigated grief together. As Ellie initiated conversations about Lily, Taylor-O’Connor found herself confronting her own feelings of loss, leading to a shared emotional journey.
Understanding Grief in Animals
Ellie’s grieving process is not just about expressing sadness; it is also about how animals communicate their emotions. Taylor-O’Connor describes the signs of Ellie’s grief: her body language shifts, her feathers droop, and she appears to be in pain when discussing Lily. This observation raises questions about how grief manifests in different species and challenges the notion that only humans experience such profound emotions.
Taylor-O’Connor emphasizes the societal bias surrounding pet loss, noting that many people view the death of a pet as less significant than losing a human. “When you lose a pet, the world sees it like you’ve lost maybe a quarter of a human,” she remarked. This sentiment is echoed by many pet owners who feel their grief is often minimized.
The film also addresses the importance of allowing animals to express their grief. The ability for Ellie to communicate her feelings not only aids in her healing but also fosters a deeper understanding of the emotional connections shared between humans and animals. “Having an outlet for animals to be able to express grief is probably very important and meaningful for them,” Taylor-O’Connor explained.
Ellie’s communication skills are noteworthy. Taylor-O’Connor reports that Ellie has access to around 1,500 options on her speech board, which gives her the ability to engage in complex conversations. “We call them options,” Taylor-O’Connor clarified, highlighting the scientific approach to studying animal communication.
Implications for Animal Cognition
The film challenges conventional perceptions of animal intelligence. Taylor-O’Connor points out the biases that exist within scientific communities regarding animal cognition. “There is definitely a bias that humans are incredible, and nobody else can be as incredible as us,” she stated. This perspective can hinder progress in understanding the emotional and communicative capabilities of other species.
Ellie’s case is a compelling example of the potential for interspecies communication. Taylor-O’Connor has conducted numerous tests with Ellie, all of which she has passed, demonstrating her remarkable intelligence and ability to convey complex ideas. This ongoing research not only benefits Ellie but also aims to broaden the understanding of animal emotions within the scientific community.
As the documentary prepares for its release on November 3, it serves as a reminder of the emotional depth found in the animal kingdom. “Parrot Kindergarten” encourages viewers to reconsider how they perceive grief, particularly in the context of pet loss, and to acknowledge the significant emotional bonds that exist between humans and their animal companions.
The film illustrates that grief is a universal experience, transcending species and reminding us that love, in all its forms, endures. As Taylor-O’Connor aptly puts it, “Grief is love persevering.”
