Understanding “Tattoo Flu”: Symptoms and How to Cope After Inking
Experiencing discomfort after getting a tattoo is not uncommon, with many reporting symptoms associated with what is colloquially known as “tattoo flu.” This condition can manifest after larger tattoos or extended sessions, prompting a range of physical reactions that mimic flu-like symptoms. Rather than being a viral infection, “tattoo flu” is understood as the body’s immune response to the trauma of tattooing.
What Causes Tattoo Flu?
According to Mary Lupo, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and adjunct faculty member at Tulane University, this phenomenon arises from the body’s immunological reaction. She explains, “This absolutely happens. It’s an immune response, and I think it’s very dependent on the individual and their sensitivity.” Larger tattoos are more likely to trigger these symptoms because they represent a greater physical assault on the skin.
Timothy Lebron, a tattoo artist at Bodiesneedrest in Brooklyn, corroborates this, noting that many first-time tattoo recipients experience similar feelings after their sessions. He describes the sensation as akin to “the day after a bad hangover,” highlighting the body’s reaction of increased inflammation and fluctuating stress hormones.
Individuals who have experienced tattoo flu report symptoms that include body aches, fever, chills, and nausea. One user on Reddit shared, “[I’m] feeling so nauseous, hot and exhausted,” while another described feeling “like I got hit by a truck” due to fever and cold chills.
Expert Insights and Recommendations
Jeff Garnett, co-founder of InkLess Tattoo Removal in New York City, recounted his own experience with tattoo flu after undergoing two 10-hour tattoo sessions in 2020. Garnett views the symptoms as a natural response to the trauma of thousands of needle penetrations into the skin. However, he also suggests that some individuals who feel unwell after lengthy tattoo sessions may be suffering from common viruses. “Your body can only handle so much,” he warned.
To mitigate the effects of tattoo flu, experts recommend several strategies. Staying hydrated during and after the tattooing process is crucial. Besides hydration, Lebron suggests consuming nutritious meals and beverages high in electrolytes. “If it hits you, don’t panic,” he advises. “Rest. Drink water. Eat something with salt and carbs. Take a warm shower. You’ll usually feel fine by the next day.”
Dr. Lupo adds that patients might consider taking an anti-inflammatory medication post-session to help manage symptoms. Most individuals tend to address their discomfort symptomatically, focusing on recovery rather than worrying excessively about their condition.
While many people may experience tattoo flu, some are fortunate enough to avoid it entirely. One TikTok user humorously remarked, “I didn’t even know tattoo flu was a thing lmao and I’m covered in them,” reflecting the varied experiences surrounding this phenomenon.
As the popularity of tattoos continues to rise, understanding the potential reactions and how to manage them becomes increasingly important for both artists and clients alike.
