Youngest Goldman Sachs MD, Paulo Costa, Celebrates Major Achievement
BREAKING: Paulo Costa, at just 29 years old, has just been appointed the youngest managing director (MD) of Goldman Sachs in the firm’s 2025 class. The announcement was made on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in his career as a trader based in London.
Costa’s promotion comes amid a strong performance in Goldman’s equities division, with third-quarter revenues climbing 7% compared to the previous year. Costa leads dividend trading within Goldman’s synthetic products group for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, making his achievement particularly impactful in the current market landscape.
As the day unfolded on Thursday, the atmosphere in Goldman Sachs’ London office was electric. Costa recalled the moment he received the call confirming his promotion, which he had anticipated would come in alphabetical order. “When I heard my name, I thought, ‘Oh, hang on, this is starting to feel a little strange,'” Costa told Business Insider. His wife, a prime broker at Goldman, was right beside him when the news broke, making the moment even more special.
In a year marked by volatility, including the challenges posed by the pandemic and recent market fluctuations, Costa’s success reflects his resilience and strategic insights. He has honed his skills to navigate unpredictable markets, attributing his growth to past experiences and a lifelong interest in finance sparked during the European sovereign crisis.
Costa’s journey to MD began with his academic endeavors at the University of Warwick, where he served as the equities chief investment officer for the Warwick Investment Fund. He joined Goldman as a summer analyst in 2016 and has climbed the ranks ever since, becoming a role model for aspiring traders.
After the announcement, Costa celebrated with a toast alongside regional leaders and fellow new MDs, including a gathering of around 150 people at a nearby venue. The celebration continued with former colleagues and mentors, highlighting the strong network of support that has contributed to his success. “He was almost as excited for my phone call as my wife,” Costa remarked, referring to his mentor Lorenzo Longo.
Despite the weight of new responsibilities, Costa feels ready for the challenge. “I don’t think I necessarily have to impose myself as a leader more than I was a week ago,” he stated, acknowledging the “gravitas” that comes with the title. Reflecting on his career trajectory, he expressed pride in his accomplishments, noting, “I never imagined that, when I was 29, I would be at this stage of my career.”
As Costa steps into this significant role, the financial world watches closely. His story serves as inspiration, demonstrating that determination and passion can lead to remarkable achievements, even at a young age.
For those looking to follow in Costa’s footsteps, he advises, “You’re only ever going to be very good if you can work hard at something for a very long time, perfecting your craft.”
This momentous occasion marks not only a personal victory for Costa but also highlights the evolving landscape of leadership within global finance. The implications of his appointment are sure to resonate across the industry as Goldman Sachs continues to shape the future of finance.
