UPDATE: The much-anticipated Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square, San Francisco has officially opened its doors this season, inviting locals and visitors alike to experience a winter wonderland. Skating is available daily from 10 AM to 11 PM through January 19, 2024, with tickets priced at $20 for adults and $15 for children under eight years old.

As festive decorations illuminate the city’s shopping hub, the rink marks its 18th season of providing joy and entertainment. This year, special events including lessons, dance parties, and even drag performances are set to enhance the celebratory atmosphere, according to updates on the rink’s official Instagram account.

Local businesses in the area are also gearing up for a surge in holiday foot traffic, eager to capitalize on the festive spirit. Nnan Chotiphanomvivat, general manager of The Last Drop Tavern, expressed enthusiasm for the season, stating, “It’s the most festive and vibrant time of the year for us,” reflecting the excitement that the rink’s opening brings to the local community.

The Beacon Grand Hotel is joining the holiday festivities by launching its annual Holiday Tea at The Post Room, starting the day after Thanksgiving. Guests can indulge in a delightful assortment of treats, including scones and eggnog cheesecake.

In addition to the rink and local offerings, Union Square is experiencing a positive economic revival. New openings include a six-month pop-up by Dandelion Chocolate and a rotating holiday food market, both part of the city’s innovative Vacant to Vibrant program, aimed at revitalizing downtown spaces, as reported by KTVU.

The buzz surrounding Union Square is palpable, with Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of the Union Square Alliance, highlighting the significance of the rink’s reopening amid the district’s resurgence. “This is an iconic location in San Francisco. Why not reimagine it and meet the moment,” she stated, referencing Macy’s commitment to reimagine their flagship store in the area.

The festive atmosphere combined with economic revitalization makes this season particularly special for San Francisco. With the rink now open and local businesses prepared for the influx of visitors, the community is ready to embrace the holiday spirit.
