UPDATE: Rivian has just announced groundbreaking details about its upcoming 2026 R2 midsize SUV, set to revolutionize the electric vehicle market. This news comes as the automaker gears up for production, with customer deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2026.

The R2 will feature a state-of-the-art Energy Management Control Module (EMCM), a key innovation that integrates several technologies, including a bidirectional charger. This allows the vehicle to not only charge from the grid but also transfer power back to your home. This feature promises to deliver a cost-effective power storage solution for customers, particularly appealing for those looking for energy efficiency in an EV priced under $50,000.

In a significant leap forward, Rivian will utilize new 4695 battery cells that boast six times the energy capacity of the existing 2170 cells. While the exact kilowatt-hour capacity of the R2’s battery pack remains undisclosed, it is projected to achieve an impressive 330-mile range. The new cells are set to be produced domestically by LG Energy Solution starting in 2027, which could shield Rivian from tariff issues and help manage costs effectively.

Production facilities are advancing rapidly in Normal, Illinois, with the completion of the R2 body shop and general assembly building, spanning a massive 1.1 million square feet. Additionally, a 1.2 million square foot supplier park and logistics center has been finalized to support the R2 production line. Rivian anticipates commencing assembly in early 2026, with the capacity to produce up to 155,000 units annually.

Validation builds for the R2 are expected to start by the end of 2025, and pre-production units should begin rolling off the line shortly thereafter. This marks a pivotal moment for Rivian as it seeks to establish itself strongly in the competitive EV landscape.

This latest announcement highlights Rivian’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions, positioning the R2 as a key player in the future of electric vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates as Rivian prepares to launch this exciting new SUV!
