Towns Reflects on Trade Shock After Knicks Defeat Timberwolves
UPDATE: In a striking postgame reflection, Karl-Anthony Towns expressed his ongoing shock over last year’s blockbuster trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks. Following the Knicks’ decisive 137-114 victory over his former team on Wednesday night, Towns shared his feelings about the transition, stating, “I’m still stunned. It’s weird.”
Towns, who has embraced his role in New York over the past year, admitted the sight of the Timberwolves’ throwback jerseys felt surreal. “To see that Wolves jersey — especially the fire black one — and not see ‘Towns’ on the back of it, it’s strange,” he said. The Knicks’ win not only highlighted their strength but also underscored Towns’ emotional connection to his previous team.
In a shocking trade just before last season’s training camp, the Knicks acquired Towns in exchange for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. This move came as the Timberwolves had just advanced to their first Western Conference finals since 2004, raising eyebrows across the league. Towns had been viewed as a cornerstone player alongside Anthony Edwards, making the decision to trade him particularly surprising.
Reflecting on his time with the Timberwolves, Towns noted, “Built something special there.” He admitted to feeling a lingering bond with his former teammates, revealing he keeps in touch “every day, if not every other day.” The emotional weight of the trade was palpable during the game, as Towns almost referred to the Timberwolves as “we,” illustrating his enduring connection to the franchise.
As for the matchup, Towns showcased his skills with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks in just 31 minutes. His performance was highlighted by a powerful dunk over Edwards, who took it in stride, acknowledging Towns’ imposing presence on the court. “Man, he dunked on me today,” Edwards said. “But he’s strong as hell. And he’s 7 feet tall.”
The Knicks and Timberwolves both aim for higher stakes this season after their successful playoff runs last year. Towns expressed admiration for his former team’s current performance, stating, “They’re a great team. To see what they’re doing right now, special, and I expect nothing less than greatness from them.”
As both teams continue to fight for dominance in the league, the emotional narratives surrounding players like Towns and his ties to Minnesota add an intriguing layer to their ongoing rivalry. With the NBA season in full swing, fans will be eager to see how these dynamics unfold in future matchups.
