Coastal Flooding Alert: King Tides Surge in San Diego This Weekend
URGENT UPDATE: San Diego residents and beachgoers are urged to exercise caution as king tides return, bringing significant surf and potential coastal flooding this weekend. Starting Friday night, the area will experience higher tides that could lead to dangerous conditions along the coast.
As a powerful area of high pressure builds, temperatures are set to rise, with highs reaching the low to mid-70s along the coast and the low 80s inland. This warming trend is perfect for outdoor activities, but safety is paramount for those heading to the beach.
Officials warn that king tides will peak during morning high tides, especially between 8 and 9 a.m.. Wave heights are anticipated to reach between 4 to 6 feet, which can create strong rip currents and rough surf conditions. Coastal Flood Advisories are currently in effect for all beaches in San Diego County until late Friday night.
These king tides are a result of the Beaver Moon, the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, which enhances gravitational pull and intensifies tidal movements. This natural phenomenon can lead to some of the highest and lowest tides experienced throughout the year.
While beachgoers enjoy the warmer weather, they must remain vigilant. The National Weather Service has emphasized the importance of staying informed about changing conditions and preparing for possible flooding in low-lying coastal areas.
Looking ahead, a shift in the weather pattern next week could bring the first chances of rain to the region, potentially starting as early as Wednesday. Forecast models indicate the possibility of rain extending through next Sunday, although the timing and intensity remain uncertain.
For now, as the weekend approaches, residents should prioritize safety while enjoying the pleasant temperatures. Stay updated on local forecasts and heed any warnings from authorities as conditions evolve.
