UAA Appoints Dr. Jay Butler as New Dean of College of Health

Dr. Jay Butler has been appointed as the new dean of the College of Health at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). He will officially assume his new role on December 28, 2025. Butler, who is a prominent expert in infectious diseases, brings a wealth of experience from both state and federal health organizations.

Butler’s most recent position was as the deputy director for infectious diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, where he served for six years. His extensive career also includes serving as Alaska’s chief medical officer and leading the Alaska Division of Public Health’s epidemiology section. Additionally, he directed the CDC’s Arctic Investigations Program and worked with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.

Significant Contributions to Health Education

UAA Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Denise Runge, expressed confidence in Butler’s leadership. In a statement, she noted, “Dr. Butler joins UAA at an exciting time for our university. His leadership and commitment to Alaska will be instrumental in strengthening UAA’s position as the state’s designated health university.”

Butler’s academic involvement is noteworthy as well. He has served for 16 years as an affiliate professor at UAA, contributing to the education of future health professionals in Alaska.
