Urgent Update: Trump’s Gaza Peace Deal on Brink of Collapse
UPDATE: The Trump administration is in a state of panic as the president’s historic Gaza peace deal faces imminent collapse, according to a report from Axios released today. This urgent development raises significant concerns for diplomatic efforts in the region.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump successfully brokered a groundbreaking agreement between Israel and Hamas, which included essential stipulations such as the full withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from Gaza and a commitment from Hamas to return all Israeli hostages. However, the agreement is now under severe strain as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the inclusion of Turkey in the proposed Palestinian police force, a key element of the peace plan.
A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, expressed deep concern, stating, “The Turks were very helpful in getting the Gaza deal, and Netanyahu’s bashing Turkey has been very counterproductive.” This backlash from Netanyahu has intensified fears that the peace plan may unravel.
Recent military actions by the IDF exacerbate the situation further. Just days ago, on October 24, 2023, the Israeli military conducted a series of airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of 104 Palestinians in one night, raising alarms about the stability of the peace process. A source involved in the planning remarked, “If we don’t have reliable security and governance in Gaza that the Israelis agree to, we will get stuck in a situation where Israel is attacking all the time.”
Critics had already warned Trump about the potential pitfalls of his peace plan shortly after it was announced. High-ranking Israeli officials, including Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, openly challenged key components of the agreement, with Ben-Gvir stating on social media, “with the devil, one is forbidden to make deals,” further complicating the diplomatic landscape.
Despite these challenges, some officials within the Trump administration maintain hope for the peace plan. A senior U.S. official emphasized the need for caution, saying, “It is better to move slow and get it right because we are not gonna have a second chance.”
As tensions rise and the future of the Gaza peace deal hangs in the balance, all eyes remain on the unfolding situation. The potential impact of this diplomatic crisis could reverberate throughout the Middle East, making it crucial for stakeholders to navigate these delicate negotiations with care and urgency.
