Urgent Testimony: Angels Failed Tyler Skaggs’ Family, Ex-Wife Claims
UPDATE: In a gripping testimony on Tuesday, the ex-wife of a Los Angeles Angels employee, Camela Kay, asserted that the MLB team failed to protect her drug-addicted husband, Eric Kay, who is now serving a 22-year prison sentence for supplying the fentanyl-laced pill that led to the tragic overdose of star pitcher Tyler Skaggs in 2019. This explosive revelation comes during a civil trial in Santa Ana, California, where Skaggs’ family is seeking $118 million for lost earnings and damages.
Kay’s testimony revealed disturbing insights into the Angels’ culture, claiming she witnessed players engaging in drug use on team flights. She recalled seeing players partying and passing pills aboard the team plane, raising serious questions about the organization’s responsibility.
During her testimony, Camela Kay stated, “I am sitting in a courtroom for two days in front of a mother who lost her son and a widow,” emphasizing the emotional weight of the trial. The family of Tyler Skaggs contends that the Angels should be held accountable for allowing Eric Kay to continue working while battling addiction.
The Angels maintain that team officials had no knowledge of Skaggs’ drug use and argue that any drug-related activities were conducted during personal time. However, attorneys for the Skaggs family assert that Camela Kay’s observations of pills being passed around are crucial to their case.
Skaggs, who was 27 at the time of his death, was found unresponsive in a hotel room in Dallas prior to a game against the Texas Rangers. The coroner’s report indicated he choked on his vomit, with a toxicology report revealing a lethal mixture of alcohol, fentanyl, and oxycodone.
Testimony from five MLB players during Eric Kay’s federal trial revealed he had been distributing oxycodone to players from 2017 to 2019. Medical records from Eric Kay’s hospitalization in 2019 indicated a long struggle with addiction, involving substances such as Norco and antidepressants.
Camela Kay recounted an intervention with her husband in 2017, which was followed by Angels officials coming to discuss his drug use. She expressed concerns when, after a hospitalization for overdose, he returned to work too quickly, taking on more responsibilities.
The emotional toll of this case is significant, with Camela Kay’s testimony underscoring the tragic consequences of addiction. She revealed that messages on Eric Kay’s phone indicated he was in communication with Skaggs about obtaining drugs, raising further questions about the environment within the team.
As the trial unfolds, the focus remains on the Angels’ role in the circumstances leading to Skaggs’ death. The family’s demand for accountability continues to resonate, as the case highlights broader issues of drug use in professional sports.
This developing story is poised to attract widespread attention as the trial progresses, with implications for both the Angels organization and the MLB’s handling of drug-related issues within the league.
