UPDATE: As the MLS Cup playoffs kick off, New York City FC faces urgent challenges with a scoring drought that could impact their chances against Charlotte FC. The match is set for Tuesday, October 3, 2023 in the first game of a best-of-three series.

Key players Alonso Martínez and Hannes Wolf accounted for 28 of NYCFC’s 56 goals this season, making their performance critical for any playoff success. However, the team has scored only four goals in their last four matches, including a mere three from a victory over the Red Bulls on September 27.

Martínez, who has netted 17 goals this year, has not scored in his last three appearances. He attributes the drought to a busy schedule and international duty with the Costa Rican national team. “It’s just been the last few games that I haven’t been able to score,” he stated, expressing confidence that goals will return soon.

Head coach Pascal Jansen remains optimistic, noting the duo’s ability to score in bursts and emphasizing the need for other players to step up. “What we are looking for within the rest of the team is, can we score more from set pieces?” he stated. Jansen highlighted the importance of being the first to score in the match, which can dictate the game’s flow.

Tuesday’s match is also a chance for NYCFC to break a historical trend; they have never won against Charlotte on the road. Compounding their challenge, Charlotte will be without star player Wilfried Zaha, who is serving a one-game suspension after receiving two yellow cards.

Despite injury concerns regarding Wolf, who missed practice on Friday due to “physical issues,” he traveled with the team to Charlotte, according to a club spokesperson. As the playoffs approach, every moment counts, and NYCFC must overcome these hurdles to advance in the competition.

With the urgency of the playoffs upon them, all eyes will be on NYCFC as they aim to reignite their scoring and make a strong playoff run. The match kicks off at 7:30 PM EDT, and fans are eager to see if the team can turn the tide in their favor.
