Clippers Shocked by Chris Paul’s Departure After Late-Night Talks
The LA Clippers made a surprising decision to part ways with veteran guard Chris Paul early Wednesday morning. The move came after a lengthy conversation between Lawrence Frank, the team’s president of basketball operations, and Paul at their hotel in Atlanta. Both Kawhi Leonard and James Harden expressed their disbelief upon learning of the news, which was delivered just hours before the Clippers faced the Atlanta Hawks.
“I’m just as confused and shocked as you guys, the world,” Harden stated after the Clippers secured a 115-92 victory over the Hawks, which ended a five-game losing streak. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, adding, “Definitely surprised me. But not just Chris, it’s a lot that we were dealing with.” It was evident that Harden felt the need to focus on what he could control moving forward.
Leonard also shared his surprise, noting that he had to re-read the news to fully grasp the situation. “It was shocking to me,” he remarked, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the front office’s decision.
The decision to release Paul, a 12-time All-Star, reportedly stemmed from ongoing tensions between him and Clippers coach Ty Lue. According to sources cited by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Paul and Lue had not been on speaking terms for several weeks prior to the decision, indicating a significant rift within the team dynamics. Paul’s leadership style, which included holding management, coaches, and players accountable, had begun to create friction, leading to the belief that his presence was becoming disruptive.
Frank clarified that the decision was not based on a single incident but rather on a series of discussions that highlighted a growing disconnect within the organization. Lue expressed his reluctance to see Paul depart under these circumstances, stating, “I mean I don’t think the reason why we’re 5-16 is because of CP’s play.” He acknowledged the respect he had for Paul and noted that he did not want to see such a significant player exit in this manner.
Despite the abrupt nature of the decision, it appears that both the Clippers and Paul are now in a holding pattern. Since Paul signed a one-year contract worth $3.6 million in July, he is not eligible to be traded until December 15. The complexities of his release mean that waiving him outright is not a straightforward process. The Clippers triggered the first apron by signing Brook Lopez, putting them in a position where they cannot sign a replacement without first navigating league regulations regarding roster sizes.
While a buyout of Paul’s remaining salary could be an option, it would require a team to have the necessary roster space to sign him. Among the ten teams with available spots, only the Atlanta Hawks are not affected by the luxury tax and apron, making them a potential landing spot.
As the Clippers move forward without one of their most notable players, the implications of this decision are yet to be fully understood. Both the organization and Paul now face uncertain futures as the NBA season progresses.
