Ukrainian forces successfully targeted two oil tankers linked to Russia’s clandestine oil export operations in the Black Sea, utilizing marine drones in a coordinated strike. This operation, confirmed by an anonymous official from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), took place on November 29 and targets vessels known as the ‘shadow fleet,’ which Russia employs to circumvent Western sanctions.

According to reports from Turkish authorities, explosions were reported near the Bosphorus Strait, where the two tankers, identified as the Kairos and Virat, were located. These tankers were allegedly empty and en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk, a key terminal for oil exports. Following the strikes, both vessels sustained critical damage, igniting fires onboard and prompting immediate rescue operations for their crews.

The SBU official emphasized the significance of this operation, stating, “Video footage shows that after being hit, both tankers sustained critical damage and were effectively taken out of service. This will deal a significant blow to Russian oil transportation.” The timing of the strikes has not been disclosed, but the implications for Russian oil exports could be substantial.

Ukraine has been vocal in its demands for increased international pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet, asserting that these operations facilitate the export of substantial oil quantities, thereby financing the ongoing war. The Ukrainian government has continuously highlighted the need for global cooperation to restrict Russia’s ability to circumvent sanctions.

The strikes reflect a broader strategy by Ukraine to disrupt the logistics and supply chains that support Russian military operations. With the ongoing conflict, such targeted actions aim to diminish Russia’s resources and undermine its operational capabilities.

As the situation evolves, the international community remains focused on Ukraine’s efforts to address the challenges posed by Russia’s maritime strategies. The effectiveness of these drone strikes may influence future military and diplomatic engagements, particularly concerning sanctions and trade routes in the Black Sea region.
