Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced significant reforms to the U.S. military’s Chaplain Corps in a video message released on Tuesday. Hegseth stated his intention to “make the Chaplain Corps great again” by refocusing its mission on religious ministry, rather than viewing chaplains merely as therapists. He criticized what he termed the influence of “political correctness and secular humanism,” which he claims have diminished the role of chaplains within the military.

In his address, Hegseth highlighted issues with the Army Spiritual Fitness Guide, stating that it mentions God only once while referencing feelings eleven times and even discussing “playfulness” nine times. He expressed concern that such language “alienates” religious soldiers and pushes a secular agenda. Consequently, he announced plans to immediately scrap the guide, which was originally released in August 2025 and developed through a lengthy study by the III Corps.

An Army spokesperson, Tony McCormick, confirmed the directive, stating, “We are aggressively moving forward with Secretary Hegseth’s intent to discontinue the Army Spiritual Fitness Guide.” Hegseth emphasized that the overhaul includes simplifying the faith and belief coding system, which has grown overly complex with more than two hundred codes.

Shift Towards Spiritual Wellbeing

The Defense Secretary underscored the importance of spiritual wellbeing, advocating for it to be treated on par with mental and physical health within the military. “There will be a top-down cultural shift,” he said, aimed at creating a supportive environment for service members and addressing their spiritual needs.

When asked whether Hegseth’s video constituted formal policy changes regarding the roles and responsibilities of military chaplains, a Pentagon press officer indicated there was no additional information beyond what was presented in the video.

The reforms reflect Hegseth’s broader vision for the Chaplain Corps, aiming to enhance its relevance in a modern military context while reinforcing the spiritual foundation for soldiers. As these changes unfold, the military community will be closely observing the impact on both chaplains and service members alike.
