Dan Bongino Announces Departure from FBI After Nine Months
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has confirmed his exit from the bureau, stating he will leave his position in January 2024. The announcement comes after just nine months in the role, during which Bongino, alongside Kash Patel, faced considerable challenges and declining morale within the agency.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Bongino expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve. He also thanked the American public for the privilege of his role, concluding with a message of support for those in service: “God bless America, and all those who defend Her.”
Rumors about Bongino’s impending exit had circulated prior to the announcement. Sources within the FBI indicated that his office had remained vacant for nearly two weeks. Reports from various insiders have characterized the agency as lacking effective leadership since Bongino and Patel took charge, leading to concerns about its operational integrity. One report even described Bongino as “something of a clown.”
A staff member, speaking to Salon, remarked, “Nobody here will miss him. He has no credibility.” This sentiment reflects the challenging atmosphere within the bureau during Bongino’s brief tenure.
When approached for comment on Bongino’s departure, President Trump defended him, stating he had done a “great job” and suggested that Bongino may be looking to return to his previous media career: “I think he wants to go back to his show.” The reference underscores Bongino’s background as a conservative media personality and former Secret Service agent prior to his appointment at the FBI.
Bongino’s exit follows an array of controversies that have plagued the FBI, raising questions about the agency’s direction and effectiveness under its current leadership.
