Yankees Sign Amed Rosario to $2.5 Million Deal for 2024 Season
UPDATE: The New York Yankees have just finalized a one-year, $2.5 million contract with utilityman Amed Rosario, sources confirm. The agreement, which includes an additional $250,000 in potential incentives, marks a significant move as the team aims to bolster its right-handed batting options ahead of the 2024 season.
Rosario’s return comes after a successful stint with the Yankees last season, during which he displayed impressive versatility and hitting prowess. In just 16 games with New York, he posted a remarkable batting average of .303 and an OPS of .788. Against left-handed pitchers, Rosario excelled with a .302 average, four home runs, and an OPS of .819 in 122 plate appearances, making him a valuable asset as the Yankees face a challenge with left-handed pitching.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman emphasized the team’s need for more right-handed bats, stating, “I definitely want to give Aaron Boone some legitimate choices so he can match up when we’re facing a left-handed starter.” This move directly addresses Cashman’s concerns about the Yankees’ left-heavy lineup, which he identified as a vulnerability.
Rosario is expected to share the duties at third base with left-handed hitter Ryan McMahon, while also providing depth at second base and the outfield. His energetic presence in the clubhouse was noted as a significant morale booster for the team after his trade from the Washington Nationals last July, where he was acquired in exchange for right-hander Clayton Beeter and outfielder Brown Martinez.
The Yankees have pursued Rosario in previous offseasons, but he signed with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Nationals for starting roles. This year, however, they’ve secured their target, enhancing their roster for the upcoming season.
As the offseason progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching how Rosario integrates into the Yankees’ lineup and contributes to their overall strategy against left-handed pitching. The urgency of this signing reflects the Yankees’ commitment to improving their competitiveness in the league.
