Xi Jinping Rebukes Trump During South Korea Meeting – Urgent Update
UPDATE: In a stunning diplomatic moment, Chinese President Xi Jinping directly challenged President Donald Trump during their bilateral meeting in South Korea on July 14, 2023. This confrontation comes as Trump has boasted about his alleged role in brokering peace between Cambodia and Thailand, which has now been publicly questioned.
During a press event, Xi dismantled Trump’s claims regarding the resolution of the border dispute, stating, “During your visit to Malaysia, you witnessed the signing of the Joint Declaration on Peace along the Cambodia-Thailand border, and you provided your support.” He emphasized China’s critical involvement in facilitating peace, asserting, “China has assisted Cambodia and Thailand in our own way to resolve the border dispute, and we continue to promote peace talks to address other pressing issues in the region.”
Trump has been vocal on social media, declaring on Truth Social that he successfully signed a “great Peace Deal” and saved “millions of lives.” In a post from July 1, 2023, he proclaimed, “I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J. Trump, both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE. Congratulations to all!” However, just two weeks later, the situation escalated with artillery exchanges resulting in a tragic death toll, widespread injuries, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
A senior U.S. official had previously dismissed China’s role in these events, stating, “From the U.S. standpoint, we actually don’t believe that China played a significant role—and really any kind of consequential role—in achieving the peace.” This official’s remarks starkly contrast the narrative Trump has been promoting.
Xi’s remarks were a calculated move to not only reinforce China’s position as a regional peacemaker but also to subtly embarrass Trump in front of an international audience. The Chinese government has been strategically enhancing its diplomatic initiatives, with the vice foreign minister hosting an emergency diplomatic meeting aimed at addressing regional tensions earlier in July.
Despite the clear rebuke, Trump remained unfazed, referring to Xi as his “longtime friend” and a “great leader,” while expressing excitement over potential trade discussions. This interaction underscores the complexities of international diplomacy, especially as tensions simmer in the region.
As this story develops, it raises significant questions about the effectiveness of Trump’s foreign policy claims and the realities on the ground in Southeast Asia. Analysts will be closely monitoring how these diplomatic exchanges impact U.S.-China relations moving forward.
