Wrestling Season Kicks Off: Front Range Teams Gear Up for 2025-26
UPDATE: As the high school wrestling season heats up, teams across the Front Range are making urgent preparations for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Coaches and athletes are gearing up for a competitive year, with several teams eyeing improvements from last season’s results.
The Broomfield Eagles, led by Coach Jimmy Zechmann, are looking to bounce back after qualifying eight wrestlers for the 5A state tournament last year and finishing 16th overall. Senior standout Nick Penfold (157 lbs, On The Mat’s No. 4) aims to lead the charge alongside two-time state qualifiers Asher Diamond and August Soto. Zechmann stated, “We hope to build upon last year’s league runner-up finish and aim for a top 10 finish at Ball Arena this February.”
Meanwhile, the Boulder Panthers are cultivating a promising roster under Coach William Leboeuf. With team captains Isaac Wing (165 lbs, No. 13) and Alex Smith (190 lbs) driving training efforts, the Panthers are eyeing a breakthrough season. Leboeuf said, “Ollie Reynolds (Soph., 132) has put in significant work in the off-season, showing great potential.”
The Erie Tigers, under Coach Joe Ferrera, qualified eight wrestlers last season and are optimistic about their returning athletes. Senior Tyler Muir (157 lbs, No. 6) is coming back after a challenging state experience, and Ferrera emphasizes their commitment to staying competitive in 5A after losing six seniors.
In Class 4A, the Frederick Golden Eagles are looking to improve upon last year’s results, with Coach Benito Gutierrez highlighting junior heavyweight Nacoa Meisinger as a key athlete. Gutierrez noted, “We are a younger team this year, but we have lots of returning talent.”
The Mead Mavericks are also set for a comeback with senior Carter Woods (190 lbs, No. 2) as a focal point, aiming for a strong finish after placing fifth last season. Coach Ty Tatham is excited about the upward trend in Woods’ performance throughout his high school career.
In Class 3A, the Holy Family Tigers boast a strong lineup, with Coach Ernie Derrera eager to capitalize on their depth. Senior Lorenzo Trujillo (No. 2 at 120 lbs) is expected to lead the charge as they aim to improve on last year’s ninth-place finish at state.
The excitement builds as teams prepare for their first meets, with many athletes sharing hopes of personal and team victories. The wrestling community is buzzing with anticipation as these high school teams get ready for action in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses, and follow your favorite teams as they strive for success on the mat!
