Urgent Study Reveals Digital Twin’s Impact on Facility Management
UPDATE: A groundbreaking study has emerged from Western Michigan University, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced facility management through digital twin technology. This research, conducted by scholars Obaidullah Hakimi, Hexu Liu, and Osama Abudayyeh, reveals critical insights into the operational challenges faced in the architecture, engineering, construction, and facility management (AEC-FM) sectors.
In a comprehensive bibliometric analysis covering 248 research articles from January 2012 to March 2022, the study emphasizes that the operation and maintenance (O&M) phase of facility lifecycle management is the most prolonged and costly yet remains under-addressed. The findings underscore the pressing need for better asset management strategies to utilize real-time data effectively, a gap that digital twin technology aims to fill.

Additionally, the authors revealed seven vital research clusters including AI-based predictive maintenance and digital facility management. These findings were visualized using VOSviewer, indicating a need for a shift towards more practical applications of theory-focused studies.
Moreover, the study highlights that the UK, particularly the University of Cambridge, leads in citation impact, affirming the international significance of these findings. The journal Automation in Construction is noted as the most prominent publication source in this field.
Researchers have called attention to several critical areas ripe for further exploration, such as:
