Urgent Recall: Infant Botulism Case Linked to ByHeart Formula

UPDATE: A suspected case of infant botulism in Pierce County, Washington has emerged, linked to the recently recalled ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. The affected infant is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital after falling ill from consuming the formula, raising alarms amid a troubling outbreak that has now affected 13 states since August.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially confirmed 23 cases of infant botulism associated with this formula, prompting urgent warnings for parents to cease use immediately. Thankfully, there have been no reported deaths linked to this outbreak, but health officials are stressing the importance of recognizing symptoms early.

Dr. James Miller, Health Officer for Tacoma-Pierce County, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating,

“Parents should immediately seek emergency care if their child shows any symptoms of botulism after using this product.”

Symptoms can range from mild constipation to severe paralysis, underscoring the necessity for prompt medical attention.

On November 11, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took decisive action, recalling all lots of the ByHeart formula in various packaging sizes, including 24 oz. cans and 0.6 oz. “anywhere” single-serving packets. Parents are urged to retain any recalled formula for testing purposes, clearly labeling it as “DO NOT USE” and documenting the lot numbers for health officials.

In light of this outbreak, which typically sees only about four cases of infant botulism per year in Washington, families are advised to practice stringent sanitation measures for any items or surfaces that may have come into contact with the formula.
