Subway Cars Detach in Bronx: MTA Investigates ‘Unusual Incident’
UPDATE: An urgent investigation is underway following an alarming incident where several subway cars detached from a train in the Bronx on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reported that three cars separated from a 10-car No. 4 subway train near the 149th Street-Grand Concourse station, causing significant service disruptions.
Officials are scrambling for answers as the MTA’s New York City Transit President, Demetrius Crichlow, labeled the detachment as “an unusual incident.” Fortunately, the train’s brakes activated immediately, halting both sections of the train safely. Crichlow confirmed, “The system itself failed as it should have in a safe position.”
Photographs and videos from the scene show the detached cars with cables dangling, while police flooded the area to assist anxious commuters. A rescue train was dispatched to help transfer passengers from the stranded train to the platform. It remains unclear how many individuals were on board at the time of the incident, but officials reported no injuries.
The incident left many commuters in distress. One mother, Bridget Berkley, expressed her panic while waiting to reunite with her son aboard the train. “It’s panicky, it’s very panicky… I’ve been standing here stressed and worried for my son,” she told Eyewitness News.
With the situation gradually stabilizing, service has been restored at the station, but the MTA is taking no chances. The agency announced it will conduct inspections on all R142 model subway cars to identify any potential defects.
As this investigation unfolds, commuters affected by the delays are urged to check for updates on service status. Stay tuned for further developments as the MTA continues to prioritize safety and transparency in the wake of this unsettling incident.
