St. Louis Offers Free Firewood to Residents Amid Winter Chill
UPDATE: St. Louis residents can now take advantage of free firewood this winter, as the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry has just announced a new initiative aimed at supporting the community during the colder months. This program is available at select locations while supplies last, providing a much-needed resource for those facing the winter chill.
Residents can collect firewood at the following locations: the lower Muny Opera Parking Lot in Forest Park, near the compost area off Holly Hills Drive in Carondelet Park, and just north of Picnic Site #4 in O’Fallon Park. Delivery of the firewood occurs in the afternoons, from Monday to Friday, ensuring accessibility for local residents.
This initiative is part of the City’s broader commitment to sustainability and community support. Parks Director Greg Hayes emphasized that this program is made possible through ongoing park maintenance and storm response efforts, utilizing wood from city tree removal work.
The firewood will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and residents are urged to arrive early to secure their supply. Notably, commercial vehicles and trailers are prohibited from participating in the program. The initiative will continue through early March 2026, but supplies may vary by location and day.
For more information, residents can contact the Forestry Division at (314) 613-7200. This is an excellent opportunity for St. Louis residents to stay warm this winter while also benefitting from the city’s sustainability efforts.
Don’t miss out on this vital resource—visit your local park today and grab your free firewood before it’s gone!
