Salvation Army Urgently Needs Toys for 400 Families This Christmas
UPDATE: The Salvation Army is facing an urgent toy shortage as it strives to support 400 families in San Diego this Christmas. With just one week left before distribution begins, the organization is desperately seeking toy donations to ensure every child has a gift to open this holiday season.
Inside the Salvation Army Kroc Center warehouse, shelves are filled with basketballs, dolls, and art supplies, but the total collection falls critically short of the goal. “Even like a Barbie house, this is something that we’ll put aside specifically for a family that had a particularly difficult year,” said Glynis Eckert, director of marketing for the Kroc Center.
The need is especially pressing for older children, with many donations focused on younger age groups. Janet Reade, the director of volunteers and community engagement, emphasized, “Our pre-selected families can register their children of all ages, from 0 to 12, so we are looking for toys for those older age groups.”
Time is running out. Next week, parents from a pre-registered list will select toys for their children, and the Salvation Army hopes to provide three to four toys per child. “We want every parent to have the opportunity to give their child a special Christmas,” Eckert stated.
If the toy shortage persists, the organization may have to purchase toys, creating a significant financial burden that could hinder its broader mission of spreading holiday cheer. The Salvation Army aims to deliver a complete Christmas experience, including toys, gift wrap, bows, gift tags, and food boxes. “When they go home, wrapping all their toys, we want them to feel like they’ve had the Christmas experience,” Eckert explained.
Donations can be made in person at the Kroc Center, online, or through monetary contributions. Every toy counts and can make a significant difference for families in need this holiday season. Click here to donate.
