URGENT UPDATE: A Rutgers University fraternity is under investigation following a serious incident that left a 19-year-old student in critical condition. Local authorities confirm that the student was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after an emergency call led police to the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity house in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The fraternity has been placed on interim suspension as Rutgers University officials announced a cease and desist order on all fraternity activities. The chapter is now on organizational disciplinary probation until May 18 and is subject to social probation until November 3.

At 12:26 a.m. on October 25, police responded to a disconnected emergency call from the residence. Upon arrival, they discovered the student unresponsive and seriously injured. He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities have not confirmed the specific circumstances surrounding the incident, but the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating. A notice has been posted at the fraternity house declaring it an unsafe structure.

Gordy Heminger, spokesperson for Alpha Sigma Phi, stated,

“We are currently gathering information as to what happened that evening, but to be very clear … if it is determined by the fraternity, the university, or law enforcement that the undergraduate members hazed that evening, the chapter will be closed, and any member who directly or indirectly participated in those activities will be permanently expelled.”

Heminger emphasized that hazing is not tolerated within the fraternity.

This situation unfolds during a busy weekend at Rutgers, coinciding with Homecoming and Family Weekend. Students on campus expressed shock at the incident, highlighting concerns over fraternity culture. Freshman Adriana Lesniak remarked, “The whole scenario is insane because people pay a lot of money to join frats and stuff like that happens.”

As the investigation continues, Rutgers University has referred all inquiries to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is expected to provide further updates on the matter.

Authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as they work to uncover the facts surrounding this serious situation. The safety and well-being of students remains a top priority as the university navigates this troubling event.

Stay tuned for the latest developments as this story unfolds.
