Rocky Mount Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Girlfriend Shot

URGENT UPDATE: A Rocky Mount man has been charged with attempted murder after his girlfriend was shot multiple times in a home near Whitakers, North Carolina, on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Authorities from the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident at approximately 2:00 PM.

Reports indicate that a dispute erupted at a residence located in the 10000 block of Speights Chapel Road. While deputies were en route, a follow-up call revealed that a woman at the same location had sustained serious injuries from gunfire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical services transported the victim to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, where her condition remains undisclosed. Meanwhile, deputies initiated an investigation and learned that the suspect, identified as Hayward Mann, had fled the scene.

Within a short time, deputies located the 49-year-old suspect and took him into custody without further incident. Authorities recovered a firearm from Mann during the arrest. He now faces charges of felony attempted first-degree murder.

Mann is currently held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday morning at the Edgecombe County Courthouse in Tarboro.
