New York Gaming Board Set to Award Casino Licenses Monday
UPDATE: The New York Gaming Facility Location Board is poised to award as many as three full casino licenses at a crucial meeting in Manhattan on December 1, 2023. This decision marks the culmination of a two-year campaign to introduce full casino gambling—including popular table games like blackjack and roulette—to the New York City area.
The meeting will kick off at 10 a.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center Proshansky Auditorium, and it will be streamed live on YouTube, allowing the public to witness this pivotal moment. With only three bidders remaining, excitement is building as the board prepares to make potentially game-changing decisions.
Among the frontrunners is Resorts World New York City, which plans a staggering $5.5 billion investment to expand its current facility at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens. This ambitious project includes a new 500,000 square-foot gaming floor with over 6,000 slot machines and 800 table games. Additionally, the development promises to feature 2,000 hotel rooms and a 7,000-seat entertainment arena.
Another strong contender is the Metropolitan Park proposal, heavily backed by Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock Casino. This project aims to transform a 50-acre parking lot adjacent to Citi Field into a vibrant casino boasting 5,000 slot machines, 375 table games, and a spacious 18,000 sq. foot sportsbook. Plans also include a 25-acre public park and a Taste of Queens food hall.
The third active bid comes from Bally’s Casino, located in Throggs Neck, Bronx. Following MGM Empire City’s withdrawal last month, Bally’s chances have improved significantly. Their proposal includes a 500,000 sq. ft. gaming floor with 3,500 slot machines and 250 table games, along with a 2,000-seat event center and various dining and retail options.
These developments are not just about entertainment; they represent a potential economic boost for New York City, creating jobs and driving tourism. As the board meeting approaches, anticipation is high for both bidders and the public alike.
What happens next is crucial. If all licenses are awarded, New Yorkers could see these casinos operational in the near future, reshaping the local economy and entertainment landscape. Stay tuned for updates from the board meeting as this story unfolds.
