New Lenox Library Launches Urgent Care Cabinet with Narcan
UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just unveiled an urgent care cabinet, providing essential items and Narcan for community members in need. Opened on December 4, 2023, this initiative aims to support individuals who may hesitate to seek help directly, offering a range of vital resources without any questions asked.
The care cabinet includes shower products, deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, chap stick, first-aid supplies, socks, and life-saving Narcan, which rapidly reverses opioid overdoses. Michelle Krooswyk, the library’s executive director, emphasizes the importance of this resource, especially as many lower-income residents face cuts to federal programs. “We want the community to rely on the library in times of need,” she stated.
Initially scheduled for a January 2026 launch, the cabinet’s opening was expedited after feedback from Melissa Seaberg, the administrative library coordinator, recognizing the pressing needs of locals. The initiative was funded by a $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library.
The care cabinet’s impact is already evident, with many items running low, particularly lip balm, gloves, and toothbrushes. This rapid depletion highlights the urgent demand within the community. The library is also collaborating with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan at no cost, addressing the critical opioid crisis affecting many families.
Krooswyk urges residents to attend Narcan training sessions to learn how to use this life-saving medication. “The medication can be life-saving,” she remarked, underlining the cabinet’s role in fostering a supportive environment.
Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents contributing their own supplies. However, the library now regulates donations to ensure that items are hygienic and appropriately packaged. Donations can be made online through the library’s website or via an Amazon wish list.
The care cabinet initiative was inspired by successful models from other libraries, showcasing a collaborative spirit within the library community. “We like to share ideas that work,” Krooswyk noted, highlighting the shared commitment to community support.
In addition to the care cabinet, the library offers various non-literary services, including tech support for older adults, job-seeking assistance, and a warm space for unhoused residents. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to enhance community engagement and support.
The New Lenox Library, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year, is also preparing to open a new café space in January, along with a winter reading program. The care cabinet will remain available during library hours indefinitely, providing ongoing support for those in need.
Krooswyk and her team are dedicated to ensuring that the library remains a welcoming haven for all, stating, “No matter who you are, we want to support you.” The crocheted cat fundraiser, which runs until December 16, adds a creative touch to their fundraising efforts, further engaging the community.
With the library’s proactive initiatives, New Lenox residents can find essential support and resources, demonstrating the vital role local libraries play in addressing community needs.
