UPDATE: Nashville International Airport is experiencing significant ground delays today, October 20, 2023, due to a critical shortage of air traffic control staff. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the ground delay began at 10 a.m. and is expected to last until 4:59 p.m. local time. Travelers are urged to check their flight statuses and contact airlines before arriving.

As of now, 22% of departures from Nashville are delayed, with 25% of arrivals also facing disruptions. This latest incident follows Thursday’s significant delays at Orlando International Airport, which have since improved.

The ongoing government shutdown, forcing federal employees—including FAA workers—to work without pay, is exacerbating the staffing issues. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy acknowledged the immense stress on air traffic controllers, stating, “Many are the heads of households, the only income earners in their homes, and they have families. The fact that they’re having a hard time paying their bills is deeply concerning.”

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has warned that the situation was dire even before the shutdown. Union President Nick Daniels expressed alarm, saying, “Many are already working six days a week, and now they are facing the impossible choice of taking on extra jobs just to feed their families.” He emphasized that Congress is leading toward what could become the longest shutdown in U.S. history, which poses serious risks to an already fragile air traffic control system.

Travelers at Nashville International Airport are urged to stay informed and prepared for continued disruptions. Authorities recommend checking flight statuses frequently and remaining in contact with airlines. As the situation develops, further updates will be provided.

This crisis highlights the human impact of the government shutdown, affecting not only air travel but also the financial stability of families relying on these crucial jobs. The urgency of addressing these staffing shortages cannot be overstated, as the safety of the nation’s air travel system hangs in the balance.
