Makhachev Claims Welterweight Title, Ties UFC Winning Streak
UPDATE: In a stunning performance, Islam Makhachev has just captured the welterweight championship at UFC 322, overwhelming Jack Della Maddalena with a unanimous decision victory on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. This victory not only secures Makhachev’s place as a two-division champion but also ties him with Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history at 16 consecutive wins.
Makhachev (28-1) demonstrated undeniable dominance throughout the fight, controlling the octagon for a staggering 19 minutes and 10 seconds. His strategic grappling and striking power left Della Maddalena (18-3) unable to respond effectively, as Makhachev outstruck him 123-32.
“This is the dream,” Makhachev declared after the fight. “All my life I’ve fought for this. I worked hard for this moment.” The victory marks a significant milestone in Makhachev’s career, confirming his status as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history.
Della Maddalena, who had not tasted defeat since his early career losses, struggled to cope with Makhachev’s relentless tactics. The Australian fighter faced a barrage of calf kicks that significantly hampered his mobility, leaving him resigned by the third round. Despite the overwhelming odds, he managed to avoid a finish, showcasing his resilience.
Reflecting on his transition to welterweight, Makhachev noted, “My life has changed. I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. It made this night easy.” His performance was nothing short of masterful, as he executed every takedown attempt with precision, keeping Della Maddalena pinned for extended periods.
As Makhachev sets his sights on the future, he made a bold statement, saying, “Open the White House,” referring to the UFC’s anticipated event in 2026. The welterweight division is packed with talent, and fans are eager to see how Makhachev’s journey continues.
With this victory, Makhachev not only elevates his standing within the sport but ignites excitement for upcoming matchups in a highly competitive welterweight landscape. Stay tuned for further developments as Makhachev prepares to take on new challenges in the UFC.
