URGENT UPDATE: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has confirmed that all northern sites will be stocked with rainbow trout just in time for the highly anticipated opener on Saturday, October 18. This announcement comes after recent delays due to unseasonably warm weather, which has affected stocking schedules statewide.

Fishers across the region can rejoice as cooler temperatures have finally set in, allowing the IDNR to prepare for this vital fishing season. Key locations for trout fishing in northern Illinois include:

– **Cook County:** Axehead, Belleau, Busse Woods North, Green, Horsetail, Sag Quarry East, and Wolf Lake at William W. Powers State Recreation Area.
– **DuPage County:** Grove, Pickerel, and Silver.
– **Kankakee County:** Bird Park Quarry and Rock Creek at Kankakee River State Park.
– **Kendall County:** Big Lake at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area.
– **Lake County:** Sand Lake at Illinois Beach State Park.
– **McHenry County:** Spring Grove Hatchery Pond and Lake Atwood.
– **Will County:** Lake Strini and Van Horn Woods.

Fishing enthusiasts are reminded that a valid fishing license and an inland trout stamp are required to participate, with a daily bag limit set at five fish.

The IDNR also announced that 14 Downstate waters will not be stocked prior to the opener, impacting fishing opportunities in those areas. This year’s stocking delays underscore ongoing concerns related to climate change, which have increasingly affected seasonal patterns.

As the trout opener approaches, anglers are encouraged to prepare for an exciting day of fishing. Be sure to check local regulations and plan your visit to one of the stocked sites for a chance to reel in some rainbow trout!

Stay tuned for further updates as the opener date approaches, and share this news with fellow fishing enthusiasts eager to hit the water!
