Glock Inc. Halts Production of Pistols Amid Chicago Violence Crisis
BREAKING: Glock Inc. has made an urgent decision to halt production of its current pistol models due to mounting legal pressure from the City of Chicago. This significant action comes in response to alarming concerns that these firearms are being modified with illegal “Glock switches,” allowing them to function as fully automatic weapons. City officials assert that these modifications are linked to a disturbing surge in gun violence.
Mayor Brandon Johnson announced this development earlier today, declaring it a pivotal victory in the city’s ongoing battle against gun violence. “Glock switches have been used in the vast majority of mass shooting incidents in our city,” Johnson stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Authorities report that Chicago has seen an average of one recovery of modified Glocks every day from early 2021 through May 2024. The city has been at the forefront of advocating for stricter firearm regulations, and this legal action marks a historic moment in their efforts.
The decision follows a recent ruling from the Cook County Circuit Court, which denied Glock’s motion to dismiss the city’s lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Glock knowingly manufactured firearms that could be easily converted into illegal weapons, raising serious safety concerns for residents. The production and sale of these models will officially cease on November 30, 2024, a date that could represent a milestone in the fight for peace and safety in Chicago.
Mary B. Richardson-Lowry, Corporation Counsel, stated, “Glock’s decision is an important step towards curbing the spread of illegal guns on our streets.” This legal victory has already prompted similar lawsuits from state attorneys in New Jersey, Minnesota, and Maryland, with Illinois and California also introducing legislation aimed at combatting the spread of Glock switches.
Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood emphasized the broader implications, saying, “This is a major step forward for the City of Chicago and other jurisdictions across the country that have been terrorized by these devices.”
Despite the cessation of these pistol models, Chicago’s Department of Law plans to pursue injunctive relief and civil penalties against Glock for the harm caused by the distribution of these convertible weapons. City officials remain steadfast in their commitment to addressing the gun violence crisis, aiming to forge a safer future for all residents.
This development is not only a legal victory for Chicago but also a significant moment in the national dialogue on gun control and public safety. As communities across the country grapple with the repercussions of gun violence, this case has the potential to influence future legislation and reforms.
