Former UFC Star BJ Penn Arrested for Assault in Hawaii
UPDATE: Former UFC champion BJ Penn has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault in Hawaii, marking his sixth arrest of 2025. The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 28, 2025, when officers from the Hawaii Police Department took Penn into custody at 11:50 a.m. after responding to an assault report the previous day at a residence in Hilo, Hawaii.
According to authorities, the 45-year-old alleged victim claims that Penn punched and kicked him multiple times, requiring medical treatment for his injuries. Following his arrest, Penn posted $1,000 bail and is scheduled for an initial court appearance on December 2, 2025. If convicted of third-degree assault, Penn could face up to one year in jail.
This arrest adds to a troubling pattern for the former UFC lightweight champion, who has faced a series of legal issues this year. In October, a judge ordered Penn to undergo a mental health evaluation, which he is set to address in court in January.
The former athlete’s troubles appear to stem from his claims that “imposters” have replaced his family members. Earlier this year, his mother, Lorraine Shin, was granted a protection order against him following allegations of domestic abuse. In April, he urged local police to investigate the “murders” of family members, alleging that fraudsters are attempting to seize control over his family’s affairs.
BJ Penn, who retired from mixed martial arts in 2019, ended his fighting career on a dismal seven-fight losing streak. This latest incident raises serious concerns regarding his mental health and well-being, with many fans and observers calling for immediate support for the troubled athlete.
As this story develops, all eyes will be on the upcoming court hearings and any potential implications for Penn’s future. Stay tuned for updates on this breaking news.
