UPDATE: The Denver Betterment Committee is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, marking a significant milestone in its mission to enhance the beauty and spirit of Denver. Established in 2000, the committee has become a vital force in bringing community events and beautification projects to the area, impacting both residents and visitors alike.

Today, the committee consists of 14 dedicated members, including member Caryl Tjaden, who has been involved since 2003. Tjaden emphasizes the committee’s goal: to “give the streets of Denver a more appealing look to residents and visitors passing through.”

One of their most notable early initiatives was the introduction of hanging flower baskets throughout downtown. However, as maintenance became challenging, the committee transitioned to 24 ground planters decorated with signs stating “Welcome to Denver, Our Hometown.” Local volunteers now assist in caring for these vibrant planters.

To further beautify the community, the committee has added two memorial benches located downtown at the local drugstore and at AllyKatz restaurant. Tjaden mentioned that both the planters and benches were sourced from Kay Park Recreation in Janesville, supporting local businesses.

The group has also implemented several recreational enhancements, including picnic tables, children’s digger backhoes, and bicycle racks at the Sports Complex. Notably, they replaced marigold flowers with rocks spelling out “Denver” to ensure visibility year-round without seasonal upkeep.

Seasonal decorations are another hallmark of the committee’s efforts, with displays of cornstalks, scarecrows, sunflowers, and winter decor. Tjaden noted the fun of creating scarecrows, although they have since been discontinued.

In a heartfelt tribute, the committee planted a tree in memory of Tjaden’s late husband near the current elementary school, honoring his 26-year teaching career in the area.

The crown jewel of the committee’s events is the annual “Old Fashioned Christmas.” Launched in 2003, after Tjaden was inspired by a similar event, it has grown to include over 500 votes for favorite decorated trees and tables last year. The event features stunning displays, festive activities, and local business participation, making it a highlight of the holiday season.

As the committee continues to receive growing support through donations and grants, they are committed to keeping funds available for future projects. Recently, they purchased a string of lights in memory of loved ones, adorning the evergreen trees across from City Hall.

Tjaden expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “It’s surprising the number of compliments we get, especially the flowers. It pays to do those things, and you just feel good. You feel like people appreciate it.”

With more projects on the horizon, the Denver Betterment Committee invites new members to join their mission and contribute to the beautification of their hometown. As they look to the future, the community can expect even more enhancements that enrich the vibrant spirit of Denver.

Stay tuned for updates as the Denver Betterment Committee continues to transform the community!
