Cupertino City Council Confirms Tina Kapoor as Permanent Manager
UPDATE: Cupertino’s City Council has just confirmed Tina Kapoor as the permanent city manager following a unanimous vote on November 18, 2023. Kapoor, who has been serving as interim city manager since May, officially stepped into her new role the very next day.
With nearly 25 years of extensive local government experience, Kapoor brings a wealth of knowledge to her position. Her previous roles include interim assistant city manager, deputy city manager, and economic development manager for Cupertino. Before her tenure in Cupertino, she significantly contributed to economic initiatives in Fremont and San Jose, leading efforts that spurred business growth and downtown revitalization.
Kapoor is notably recognized for her impactful work as the head of economic development in San Jose, where she was honored as a Woman of Influence in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2015. This makes her not only a leader in local government but also a role model for many, as she is Cupertino’s first Indian American city manager after immigrating from India in 1999.
In her new capacity, Kapoor will oversee all municipal operations, implement City Council policy directives, and continue to push forward Cupertino’s priorities. “I look forward to supporting our strong city team and collaborating with council and the community to maintain the high level of service that the city provides to our residents while developing a vision for the city’s future,” Kapoor stated in a recent release.
Cupertino Mayor Liang Chao expressed confidence in Kapoor’s leadership, saying, “Tina Kapoor’s experience, work ethic, and leadership make her exceptionally well-suited to guide Cupertino forward. She has been a great partner for the City Council since her appointment as interim city manager, and I look forward to working with her to continue to strengthen our organization.”
As the city embarks on this new chapter under Kapoor’s guidance, residents and stakeholders alike will be closely watching how her initiatives will shape Cupertino’s future. This appointment not only marks a significant milestone for the city but also highlights the increasing diversity in local government leadership.
