15-Year-Old Girl Killed in East Oakland Crash; 16-Year-Old Arrested
UPDATE: A tragic car crash in East Oakland has resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl, with a 16-year-old male driver arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run. The incident occurred just after 9:40 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023, when a Toyota Corolla carrying five juveniles was involved in two consecutive collisions.
According to police, the Corolla collided with another vehicle near the intersection of 14th Avenue and East 31st Street. Following the initial impact, the driver fled the scene, merging onto Interstate 580. The driver of the other vehicle pursued him and alerted police with details about the crash.
The situation escalated when the Corolla exited the freeway at 35th Avenue and sped southbound. At an intersection in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue, the Corolla was struck by a third vehicle, causing it to crash into a concrete wall.
All occupants of the Corolla were rushed to local hospitals. Tragically, the 15-year-old girl, seated in the rear, succumbed to her injuries less than an hour later. The conditions of the other three girls involved remain unclear as of Sunday morning. The suspect was hospitalized in critical but stable condition before being taken into custody.
