Williams Valley Vikings Aim for Redemption in State Playoffs
The Williams Valley Vikings are set to face Lansdale Catholic in the PIAA 2A state playoffs, kicking off on November 3, 2023, at Lehighton High School. After two disappointing exits in the state playoffs over the last two years, this matchup represents a crucial opportunity for the Vikings, especially for their senior class, which has secured three consecutive District 11 2A Championships.
Head coach Ben Ancheff emphasized the significance of this moment for the team, stating, “The tradition of winning here has been around for a long time. I believe it’s our eighth district championship title in the last ten years.” The Vikings finished the regular season with a strong record of 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the league.
As they prepare for the playoffs, the team is keenly aware of the stakes. Senior quarterback Brady Shomper reflected on the team’s journey, urging younger players not to take their opportunities for granted. “Knowing it’s my senior year, I’m just going out there playing it like it’s our last,” he said.
Overcoming past challenges is a central theme for Williams Valley. Last season, they faced Riverside in the first round, where they fell short with a final score of 24-21, largely due to turning the ball over six times. The previous year, they lost 42-21 to Dunmore, which adds weight to their current playoff aspirations.
The Vikings’ roster features standout performances that have contributed to their success. Shomper recently became the all-time career touchdown passes leader for the team, achieving 67 touchdown passes during the District 11 Class 2A playoffs. Additionally, teammate Quin Smeltz set a new record for career extra points, breaking her sister’s previous mark of 68 in a playoff game against Minersville.
The Vikings have demonstrated impressive offensive capabilities this season, averaging 44 points per game while allowing just 15 points against. This success can be attributed to a veteran-led defensive front that includes seniors Eli Weiss and Bryce Zilinski, along with juniors Camron Green and Shawn Romberger. Their combined efforts have resulted in a formidable defense, with 31 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
Weiss noted the importance of maintaining focus as the playoffs approach, stating, “We just want to treat it like another game. They (Lansdale Catholic) are a tough group of guys and give us a challenge every year.” The Vikings are determined to leverage their experience, as many players have participated in over 40 games against strong opponents.
In the District 11 2A Championship, Williams Valley showcased their offensive prowess, with Shomper throwing three second-half touchdown passes. The Vikings’ defense, led by Fletcher Thompson, who recorded a team-high 13 tackles, played a crucial role in the victory over Schuylkill Haven.
The Vikings’ recent journey has not been without its challenges. Following the departure of former head coach Stephen Seddesse after week seven, Ancheff stepped in as interim head coach. Despite the coaching change, the team maintained its discipline and focus, a testament to their readiness for the playoffs.
As the team gears up for their first-ever matchup against Lansdale Catholic, they understand the need for a reliable passing game. Shomper has thrown 30 touchdown passes and amassed 1,996 yards this season, showcasing his potential to lead the team deeper into the playoffs.
The Vikings closed out the regular season on a four-game winning streak, showcasing resilience and determination. Reflecting on their season, Bair noted, “This win was the best of the three because of all the adversity we faced all year.”
As Williams Valley prepares for the playoffs, the team embodies a spirit of community and camaraderie, with players like Christian Davis, Evan Achenbach, and Robbie Hoffman contributing to their quest for a state championship. The upcoming game against Lansdale Catholic is not just about winning; it represents a culmination of years of hard work and dedication for the Vikings.
