Philadelphia Union Launch Playoff Campaign Against Chicago Fire
The Philadelphia Union commence their quest for a first MLS Cup title with a three-game playoff series against the Chicago Fire, starting on Sunday night in Chester, Pennsylvania. Under the leadership of head coach Bradley Carnell, the Union have transformed from a team that finished 12th in the MLS Eastern Conference last season to the current holders of the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.
This postseason marks a significant opportunity for the Union, who aim to become the eighth team in league history to win the MLS Cup after finishing atop the standings. The last team to achieve this was Los Angeles FC in 2022, when they triumphed over the Union in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw.
“Our previous experience in this position taught us the value of home advantage,” said Nathan Harriel, a key player in Carnell’s strategy. “It makes a big difference being home versus away in these games. It’s great to know that the rest of this year can run through Philadelphia, and it will run through Philadelphia.”
The Union’s defense has been a cornerstone of their success, allowing the fewest goals in the league with just 35 conceded. Kai Wagner, who has contributed two goals and 11 assists, along with Jakob Glesnes, both nominees for the MLS Defender of the Year, have anchored a unit that boasts 14 clean sheets. The Union’s solid performance includes two shutouts against the Fire this season, the most recent being a decisive 4-0 victory on August 23, 2023, where four different players found the net, including leading scorer Tai Baribo with 16 goals.
In contrast, the Fire have shown resilience in recent matches, boasting a record of 5-1-2 since their defeat to Philadelphia. They secured their playoff berth with a 3-1 win against Orlando City in the Eastern Conference wild-card game, where Hugo Cuypers scored twice. “They’ve changed formations and adapted their strategy,” said Carnell, acknowledging the Fire’s tactical flexibility. “But what they don’t change is the quality of their group, and their front three are excellent soccer players.”
The Fire’s offensive lineup, which has scored 68 goals this season—the second highest in the league—is led by Cuypers, along with Philip Zinckernagel and Jonathan Bamba. Zinckernagel has tallied 15 goals and 17 assists, while Bamba has contributed five goals and 11 assists. This potent attack has propelled Chicago to their first playoff appearance since 2017.
“They’re Supporters’ Shield champs for a reason,” noted Gregg Berhalter, head coach of the Chicago Fire. “They have a deep squad, so we’ll have our hands full.”
As the Union prepare for this crucial series, they will look to leverage their home advantage and strong defensive record. The upcoming matches are poised to be a showcase of tactical prowess and high-stakes soccer, as both teams aim for glory in the MLS playoffs.
