Monica Seles Matches Djokovic’s Australian Open Win Streak
Novak Djokovic has set the benchmark in Australian Open history with his remarkable 33-match winning streak from 2019 to 2024, culminating in four championship titles. This impressive record places him as the most decorated player at the tournament, with a total of ten Men’s Singles titles. While Djokovic’s achievement stands out, he shares this milestone with an American tennis legend, Monica Seles, who also recorded a 33-match unbeaten streak in Melbourne during the 1990s.
A Glorious Beginning for Seles
Monica Seles first made her mark at the Australian Open in 1991, debuting as a mere 17-year-old. She secured the title on her first attempt, defeating Jana Novotná in the final. Seles quickly established herself as a dominant force, successfully defending her title in 1992 against Mary Joe Fernández and completing a three-peat in 1993 by overcoming Steffi Graf.
Her streak came to an abrupt halt in 1994 and 1995 when she was unable to compete due to the traumatic stabbing incident in 1993. Following her return in 1996, Seles reclaimed her Australian Open title, triumphing over Anke Huber. She continued to be a formidable competitor, reaching the semi-finals in 1999 before her streak ended at 33 matches when she was defeated by Martina Hingis, who went on to win her third consecutive title.
Legacy and Later Career
Seles’ career is highlighted by nine Grand Slam titles and her reign as world No. 1. Despite her last deep run at the Australian Open occurring in 1999, she remained a competitive presence until her retirement in 2008. During her professional journey, Seles accumulated 53 WTA singles titles, solidifying her legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
After stepping away from the full touring schedule, Seles shifted her focus to exhibition matches and charitable engagements. Her influence on women’s tennis and her remarkable achievements continue to resonate, making her a respected figure in the sport. As Seles and Djokovic share this unique record, their legacies inspire future generations of tennis players.
