Miami Dolphins Face Trade Deadline Decisions Amid Sieler Talks
The Miami Dolphins opted not to make any trades during the recent NFL deadline, despite reportedly receiving multiple offers. A notable name that emerged in trade discussions was veteran defensive tackle Zach Sieler. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins fielded calls regarding Sieler but were unwilling to consider any offer unless it included a high Day 2 pick.
Sieler, alongside wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and linebacker Bradley Chubb, was identified as part of the trade discussions. The Dolphins’ decision to remain inactive at the deadline follows their recent trade of Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth-round pick. With the Dolphins currently sitting at a disappointing 2-7 record and facing a potential rebuilding phase, speculation about further trades may continue in the coming days.
The Dolphins’ front office, which recently saw a change in leadership, has been under pressure to evaluate the future of the team. This environment parallels moves made by other franchises, such as the New York Jets, who executed significant trades involving key players like Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner.
Despite his current underwhelming performance this season, Sieler has been a consistent contributor since joining the Dolphins after being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. His role is particularly crucial given the team’s reliance on a young defensive line that features three rookie draft picks: first-rounder Kenneth Grant, fifth-round selection Jordan Phillips, and seventh-round pick Zeek Biggers.
Another factor complicating the potential trade of Sieler is the significant contract extension he received during training camp, which included a signing bonus of $25 million. This financial commitment would add substantial dead money to the Dolphins’ salary cap, making a trade less appealing.
Head coach Mike McDaniel discussed the decision-making process leading up to the trade deadline, which involved interim general manager Champ Kelly and owner Stephen Ross. While McDaniel did not disclose specific names or details, he emphasized that the Dolphins did not find any offers compelling enough to warrant changes to their roster.
McDaniel stated, “I mean, it’s tough for me to – ‘close,’ as a deal gets done or it doesn’t, you’re either far off or you’re real close but somebody has to let down their guard or their positioning. All deals are not close to me until they’re done, so I have a weird way of looking at it.”
As the Dolphins navigate a challenging season, fans are left to ponder the implications of the recent trade discussions and the future direction of the organization. The team’s inactivity at the trade deadline has drawn criticism, reflecting the disappointment among supporters regarding the current state of the franchise.
With the trade deadline passed, the Dolphins will now focus on their upcoming games and the challenge of improving their performance as they look to regain momentum in a competitive league.
