The Kansas City Chiefs’ hopes of reaching the playoffs were dashed on December 14, 2025, as they fell to the Los Angeles Chargers in a closely contested game that ended 16-13. The defeat was compounded by an injury to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was helped off the field late in the game with a left knee injury.

The Chargers took control of the game after a second-half rally led by quarterback Justin Herbert, despite him playing with a broken left hand. The turning point came when Derwin James intercepted a pass thrown by backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, sealing the victory for Los Angeles and eliminating Kansas City from postseason contention for the first time since 2014.

Mahomes sustained a torn ACL during the game, as confirmed by an MRI, and the Chiefs announced they are exploring surgical options. The injury occurred when Mahomes was attempting to throw the ball away while being tackled by defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand. After the game, he was seen with a white towel draped over his head, indicating the emotional weight of the situation.

The Chiefs started strong, with Mahomes scoring a touchdown on their opening drive and extending their lead to 13-3 by halftime. However, the Chargers responded with renewed energy, scoring ten unanswered points to take the lead. Herbert’s quick passes and a touchdown catch by rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith contributed to the Chargers’ comeback, showcasing their resilience.

“It’s a ball team. This is a ball team,” remarked Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh after the victory. He expressed pride in his team’s performance, noting their ability to compete against a storied rival. James echoed his coach’s sentiments, stating, “Coming into Arrowhead Stadium and getting a win means a lot for our team.”

As the game neared its conclusion, Minshew attempted to rally the Chiefs, completing several crucial passes. Yet, the interception thrown to James extinguished any hopes of a last-minute victory. The Chiefs will now rely on Minshew for the remainder of the season, including an upcoming primetime matchup against the Denver Broncos on Christmas night.

In addition to Mahomes’ injury, the Chiefs faced several player absences and injuries that hindered their performance. Notably, Tyquan Thornton entered the concussion protocol after a significant hit. The team now finds itself in an unfamiliar position, having to watch the playoffs from home as the Chargers celebrate their second consecutive season with ten wins.

This loss marked a stark contrast to earlier in the season when the Chargers defeated the Chiefs in their opener in Brazil, setting the tone for both teams’ trajectories. As Kansas City reflects on a difficult season, it remains to be seen how they will regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead without their star quarterback.
