Celtics Struggle with 0-3 Start, Face Tough Decisions Ahead
The Boston Celtics find themselves winless after the first week of the 2025-26 NBA season, starting with a record of 0-3. This marks the franchise’s worst opening since the 2013-14 season, which was notable for being the last time they failed to qualify for the playoffs. During that challenging period, the Celtics underwent a significant roster overhaul following the trades of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
While the current scenario also involves a roster transition, the reasons are markedly different. The Celtics have been severely impacted by the absence of Jayson Tatum, who suffered a significant injury, and were forced to part ways with four vital members of their 2024 championship roster: Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet. The departures were primarily driven by financial constraints rather than a strategic rebuild.
Weighing the Future: To Tank or Not to Tank?
The question now arises: should the Celtics consider tanking to secure a high draft pick? Unlike the complete reset of the 2013-14 season, the current roster retains at least four key players from their championship run, which could keep them competitive in the next season. When Tatum returns, he will be joined by Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard, potentially positioning the team for a quick rebound into contention by the 2026-27 season.
On the other hand, the financial implications of the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) encourage teams to pursue high-caliber players on rookie contracts. Teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers have benefited from young talents such as Cooper Flagg and VJ Edgecombe, respectively, allowing them to maintain financial flexibility while building around established stars.
If the Celtics can secure a top-five draft pick, they could add another promising talent to their core, enhancing their chances of returning to prominence in the Eastern Conference. Current analyses suggest that Boston may indeed be heading toward a tanking strategy. According to the sports prediction app ProphetX, the Celtics have the third-best lottery odds, with a 40 percent chance of missing the playoffs altogether. This is a stark contrast to the pre-season expectations, where analysts like ESPN’s Kevin Pelton predicted the team would win approximately 46 games.
Rebounding Woes and Historical Context
Early signs are not promising for the Celtics, who have struggled on the boards. In their recent game against the Detroit Pistons, they were outrebounded 55-38, following a similar performance against the New York Knicks, where they lost the rebounding battle 53-37. On average, the Celtics are allowing their opponents to grab an alarming 16.7 offensive rebounds per game, the worst record in the league.
The history of the Celtics starting a season with an 0-3 record raises concerns. In the nine previous seasons when the team faced a similar start, they failed to reach the playoffs in six of those instances. Given the current dynamics, the Celtics may find it prudent to consider a strategic approach that aligns with their long-term objectives.
With the current trajectory, the Celtics are at a crossroads. They must decide whether to push for a competitive season or strategically position themselves for a brighter future. The decisions made in the coming weeks will be critical in shaping the franchise’s direction.
