Beloved Teacher Kathleen Ann Giacalone Passes Away at 88
Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a cherished educator and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Known for her dedication to teaching and her passion for travel, Kathleen’s life was marked by a commitment to her family and her profession.
Born on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, Kathleen was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. She later moved to Lomita, where she built a life with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone. Kathleen devoted 39 years to shaping young minds as an elementary school teacher, leaving a lasting impact on her students.
A Life Filled with Love and Commitment
Throughout her career, Kathleen exemplified dedication, often going above and beyond to support her students and their families. After retiring, she embraced her love for travel, exploring new places and cultures, which brought her immense joy and fulfillment.
Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack, and their two children: daughter ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek and son Paul (Kelly) Giacalone. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna, along with numerous nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply.
In honor of Kathleen’s legacy, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to several charitable organizations, including Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild.
Final Farewell
A Funeral Mass will be held on December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many.
Kathleen’s warm spirit and unwavering commitment to her family and community will be remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy as an educator and a loving family member will continue to inspire future generations.
