Jump Into Action: Unique Fundraiser at San Clemente Pier This Sunday
Residents of San Clemente will have a rare opportunity this weekend to partake in an activity usually deemed illegal: jumping off the San Clemente Pier. On October 15, 2023, a fundraiser organized by the nonprofit organization Pier Pride allows participants to leap from the pier into the ocean for a donation of $1,000. This event aims to raise funds for necessary improvements to the historic pier, which welcomes approximately 2 million visitors annually.
Lori Donchak, a board member and co-founder of Pier Pride, emphasized the importance of this event. “Marine safety will supervise the jump, and it’s the only legal way to jump off the San Clemente Pier, unless you participate in our junior lifeguards program,” she explained. Participants will be required to swim or use a water scooter to return to shore after their jump.
The San Clemente Pier, which is nearing its 100th anniversary in 2028, has been subject to significant wear and tear due to its heavy foot traffic. Donchak highlighted the need for improvements, stating, “We are trying to put her in her very best version for 2028.” The funds raised from this unique event will be allocated toward enhancing the pier’s entrance, including landscaping improvements and restoring the pier’s base.
This initiative comes at a time when local journalism is facing significant challenges. With federal funding for public media diminishing, organizations like LAist are relying on community support to maintain their news coverage. The LAist newsroom plays a crucial role in providing independent reporting on local issues, including government oversight, climate change, and the housing crisis.
In recent weeks, the topic of funding for public media has gained attention as Congress voted to eliminate essential resources, resulting in a budget loss of $1.7 million for LAist. The organization has reiterated its commitment to serving the community, an effort that hinges on reader support.
As the San Clemente Pier fundraiser approaches, local residents are encouraged to contribute to this initiative while enjoying a memorable experience. The event not only supports the preservation of a cherished community landmark but also fosters a sense of collective responsibility towards local journalism and civic engagement.
