Hundreds Rally in Estes Park for National No Kings Protest
A diverse crowd gathered in Estes Park, Colorado, to participate in the No Kings protest, a part of a nationwide movement advocating for democratic values and opposing authoritarianism. This event, held on March 15, 2024, attracted both locals and visitors, including families and individuals dressed in colorful costumes, all standing in solidarity for their beliefs.
The No Kings Day protest was one of many organized across Colorado, reflecting a growing sentiment among citizens concerned about the erosion of democratic principles. Protesters carried signs with slogans such as “No Kings, Protect Democracy” and “Refuse Unlawful Orders,” creating a vibrant atmosphere despite the chilly mountain winds. One participant, donning an inflatable orange hood, expressed his commitment by saying, “If I’m going to protest in Estes Park, I might as well do it as Kenny. We’ve got to work together — there are no kings in America, or at least there shouldn’t be.”
Participants included Chris and Eleanor Stewart, who traveled from Denver with their four daughters. Chris shared his concerns, stating, “It’s sad to see women’s rights being rolled back as our daughters come of age. They have fewer rights now than we did when we were their age.” Eleanor added, “We’re here to support democracy. We want our kids to see that it’s worth showing up for.” This marked the first protest the Stewart family attended together, motivated by their observations of national events over the past nine months.
Young locals, including climbers, guides, and freelance outdoor journalists, also joined the demonstration. One journalist remarked, “I mostly cover climbing and conservation, but this matters too. Journalism matters.” Another participant noted the impact of the ongoing government shutdown on friends who are federal employees, emphasizing the importance of standing in solidarity with them.
The protest maintained a peaceful demeanor throughout, with a minimal police presence ensuring order. Participants praised the town’s collaborative spirit, with one protester in an eagle costume stating, “It’s different here. Peaceful. And with all the tourists coming through, it’s a great place to get maximum exposure for the movement.”
History resonated within the protest as well, with some attendees linking the day’s message to Colorado’s past. One man held a sign honoring Captain Silas Soule and Lieutenant Joseph Cramer, who famously defied orders during the Sand Creek Massacre. He explained, “They followed conscience over command. That’s what this moment feels like — a test of conscience. When power starts demanding immoral things, it comes down to the individual to refuse.”
As the afternoon progressed, snow flurries began to swirl, and the crowd gradually thinned. Although the turnout may not have matched larger gatherings in cities like Denver or Fort Collins, the event represented a significant display of civic engagement for this small town bordering the Rocky Mountain National Park.
Overall, the No Kings protest in Estes Park illustrated a commitment to democratic values and a collective call for accountability.
