Greeley Launches Search for New Public Works Director

The city of Greeley is actively seeking a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino, who left the position on December 1, 2023, after four years of service. Trombino, who had previously served as director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa, played a pivotal role in several significant projects during his tenure.

Among the initiatives Trombino oversaw are the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement project, the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program, and the Catalyst project, which is set to undergo a citywide vote regarding a zoning ordinance recently passed by the city council.

Acting City Manager Brian McBroom expressed gratitude for Trombino’s contributions, stating, “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city. We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.” His work has been credited with positioning Greeley for future growth, especially regarding the infrastructure improvements necessary to accommodate the city’s expanding needs.

Trombino’s legacy includes initiating a major stormwater improvement project, which represents a $500 million investment aimed at upgrading aging infrastructure and enhancing the city’s storm management capacity. He was also instrumental in attracting Alquist 3D, a company specializing in 3D printing for construction, which collaborates with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project.

At the time of his departure, Trombino’s salary was reported to be $228,800, according to Kim Kappel, Greeley Public Information Officer. The city has not disclosed the reasons for his exit, citing it as a personnel matter without further elaboration.

The city has outlined a job description for the new public works director, emphasizing the necessity for managing ongoing large-scale city projects and securing funding while ensuring effective communication across various city departments. The anticipated salary range for the position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum salary of $234,800 based on experience.

As of 2024 census data, the median income for Greeley residents stands at approximately $76,462. The city is keen on filling the public works director position promptly to maintain the momentum of Trombino’s initiatives, with no plans to appoint an interim director.

Furthermore, Greeley is also in the process of finding a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who has been named the next city administrator of Portland, Oregon.
