A public meeting held on November 12, 2023, at the Santa Clarita Activities Center brought significant attention to a proposed eight-story courthouse at the intersection of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard. Representatives from the Judicial Council presented plans to consolidate juvenile criminal cases from the San Fernando Valley and facilitate felony arraignments and trials from surrounding areas, alongside additional civil and family law courtrooms.

Despite potential personal and professional benefits from the additional family law courtrooms, local resident and City Council candidate Denise Lite expressed strong opposition to the courthouse’s proposed location. In her remarks, she emphasized that placing a regional courthouse in a congested area would significantly impact the quality of life for Santa Clarita residents.

Lite argued that the courthouse would disrupt the community’s balance, which currently maintains a safe, connected atmosphere with a small-town feel where families can thrive. The anticipated increase in criminal case activity, traffic congestion, and security concerns could alter the dynamics of the community profoundly. She pointed out that the proposed site is in close proximity to residential neighborhoods such as The Summit and Old Orchard, as well as institutions like College of the Canyons and California Institute of the Arts.

The potential for heightened traffic and reduced access for emergency vehicles to local hospitals also raised alarms among residents. Lite stressed the need for development that enhances community well-being rather than decisions imposed by authorities from Sacramento.

While acknowledging the importance of improving access to court services, Lite stated, “This project — particularly in this location and the types of cases that are being considered — is not in the best interest of our city.” She urged community members to participate in the dialogue by submitting their comments to Kim Bobic at [email protected] before the deadline of November 26, 2023. She warned that silence would be interpreted as acceptance of the proposal.

As a candidate for the Santa Clarita City Council representing District 2, Lite reiterated her commitment to protecting the aspects that make Santa Clarita special—safety, community character, and quality of life. She vowed to continue attending public meetings on the courthouse proposal until amendments are made to better fit the community’s needs.

The meeting underscored a growing concern among residents regarding the implications of the courthouse on their daily lives. As discussions continue, the community remains engaged in advocating for thoughtful development that aligns with their shared values.
