WWII and Cold War Veteran Celebrates Milestone with Diploma
In a heartfelt ceremony at the Melvin Roads American Legion in East Greenbush, New York, veteran Dominic Bersani received his high school diploma on September 28, 2023, coinciding with his 99th birthday. This recognition was part of Operation Recognition, a New York state initiative that awards diplomas to veterans who did not complete their high school education due to military service.
Bersani, born in 1926, attended school in Maine but left before graduating to enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Serving as a Fireman First Class, he was deployed to Adak Island in the Aleutians, where he joined the Seabees. His efforts contributed to transforming Adak Island into a crucial staging area for operations against Japanese forces, ultimately aiding in the liberation of Attu and Kiska Islands.
Following his World War II service, Bersani continued his military career during the Cold War. As a Ship Serviceman Class 3, he was stationed in Florida from 1949 to 1954, preparing Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) for deployment in the Korean War, where U.S. forces executed amphibious assaults against North Korean troops.
Operation Recognition allows eligible veterans who served at least one day on active duty and were honorably discharged to apply for high school diplomas. This initiative aims to honor their sacrifices and contributions to the country.
At the ceremony, Dr. Kurtis Kotes, Superintendent of the East Greenbush Central School District, and Michael Harkin, Principal of Columbia High School, presented Bersani with his diploma. Dr. Kotes expressed gratitude, stating, “It is humbling to be part of the process to award a high school diploma to Mr. Bersani. He truly is part of the ‘Greatest Generation’ of our country. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with him, especially during the fanfare of his 99th birthday.”
The East Greenbush Central School District shared the event on their website, celebrating Bersani’s achievement with the message, “Congratulations to Dominic Bersani ’25!”
As he accepted his diploma, Bersani was surrounded by friends and fellow veterans, marking a significant moment not only in his life but also in the community’s acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by veterans. The ceremony highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of those who served, ensuring that their legacy is honored and remembered.
