Leo High School Choir Honors Veterans in Emotional Ceremony
The Leo High School choir performed at a special ceremony this morning honoring veterans, particularly alumni who served in the military. The event, held in the school’s auditorium on the South Side of Chicago, coincided with the observance of Veterans Day.
As the choir sang the “Star Spangled Banner,” a sense of pride filled the room. Veterans, many of whom are alumni of Leo High School, felt a deep connection to their country and their educational roots. “I sang bass. I was singing right along with them, and I still hit the notes!” said James Lewandowski, a Vietnam War veteran and former member of the Leo glee club.
The atmosphere was reflective, as veterans shared memories and stories from their time in service. Rich Venkus, another Vietnam War veteran, reminisced about his Air Force days. “I joined before I even graduated. I was in Alaska, Texas, and a couple of days in the Philippines,” he recalled.
Celebrating Legacy and Sacrifice
The ceremony not only featured music but also paid tribute to the sacrifices made by 75 Leo graduates who served in various conflicts. The names of those who lost their lives were read aloud, creating a poignant moment for all in attendance. “If you could look at some of the plaques on the wall, you could see how many men died in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, among others,” Lewandowski noted.
Every year, veterans return to their alma mater just before Veterans Day to honor their fellow classmates and to reflect on their shared legacy. This tradition fosters a sense of community among the alumni, many of whom took pride in their school’s achievements, including the recent recognition of the choir on the television show America’s Got Talent.
The ceremony concluded with a special wreath-laying tribute, symbolizing respect and remembrance for those who served and sacrificed. The event reinforces the bond between past and present Leo alumni, creating a powerful reminder of the commitment to service and the pride that comes with it.
