Jump for a Cause: San Clemente Pier Hosts Fundraiser Event
On Sunday, thrill-seekers can legally jump off the San Clemente Pier in California, turning what is typically an offense into a unique fundraising opportunity. Participants can join a marine safety-supervised event by making a $1,000 donation to support improvements to the iconic pier, which sees approximately two million visitors each year. Following their leap, jumpers will swim or use a water scooter to return to shore.
The fundraising initiative, organized by the nonprofit group Pier Pride, aims to enhance the pier’s facilities ahead of the 2028 L.A. Olympics, during which the surfing competition will be held in the area. According to Lori Donchak, a board member and co-founder of Pier Pride, the funds raised will specifically target the restoration and beautification of the pier’s entrance and its base.
Preserving a Historic Landmark
The San Clemente Pier, which is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2028, faces significant wear and tear due to its popularity. Donchak expressed the need for enhancements, stating, “This historic pier is gonna be a hundred years old in 2028, and so we are trying to put her in her very best version for 2028.” The restoration plan includes clearing out the landscape at the pier’s entrance, ensuring it is visually appealing for both visitors and the upcoming Olympic events.
The event is not only a chance for participants to dive into the ocean but also a vital step towards preserving a cherished local landmark. Donchak emphasized that the event is the only legal way to jump from the pier unless one is part of the junior lifeguards program, underscoring the significance of this organized effort.
As anticipation builds for the Olympics, community members and visitors alike are encouraged to support this initiative. By participating in the jump, donors will contribute to maintaining the pier’s legacy while enjoying an exhilarating experience. This fundraising effort exemplifies how local communities can rally together for a common goal, blending excitement with the preservation of history.
